What we do

We run a variety of things! These can be summarised under the headings below. You can also watch our most recent annual review video above.

Friday meetings

We run meetings every Friday for all year groups.

Sometimes these are unstructured meetings, like a traditional youth club – we have sport, craft, air hockey, table tennis, tuck shop and every week one additional special bought activity such as an inflatable, team activities or visitors.

Other meetings are more structured and might include cooking, wide games, trips, cycling, hiking or something else.

Weekly programmes are available so you always know what is going on and you can choose which meetings you want to attend.

Activities

During weekend and holiday periods, we run trips to a wide variety of locations.

Not all activities are open to all age groups, but we offer a range of activities for everyone!

These include outdoor adventurous activities either nearby or further afield, whole day trips out during holiday periods, trips down to London, the seaside, waterparks or anything else we can think of. We also listen to our members and incorporate their ideas where possible.

Residentials

A number of residential opportunities are offered every year.

Our youngest members have the chance to go away for one night in the local area however older members can come away for up to a week on our annual summer camp.

Our members have slept in buildings, hammocks, shelters they have built themselves, tents, on a canal boat, bunkhouses, treehouses and more!

D of E award

Open to members in year 9 and above, we run the Duke of Edinburgh award for our members as a centre registered with Herts County Council.

We run annual expeditions for bronze and silver levels using our own trained leaders and can arrange gold level expeditions with external providers as required.

It is possible to do D of E with us without attending any of our other options above, although most choose to do other options as well.

If you are doing D of E elsewhere and are looking for a placement to volunteer at we would be delighted to have your help at our weekly meetings.Duke of Edinburgh Award at NMYP

Members can choose what they want to do.

We know not everyone is free on a Friday evening, so some people sign up just to do activities at the weekend and holiday times. Conversely, some people just come to occasional Friday meetings whilst others attend everything we offer. It’s up to you!

Our ethos

Our role is to keep children happy and safe and we work hard to do this. However we also believe children should be independent, confident, resilient and resourceful and a lot of what we do - particularly on our activities and residentials - is designed to help them improve at these vitally important life skills. Whilst we will never tolerate members being unkind to each other or disrespectful to our leaders or property, we limit our rules as much as possible - we want them to be able to run around, let off steam and as much as possible have time away from their screens.

We provide safe spaces that allow kids to be kids. NMYP may not be the place for you if you are looking for an oasis of peace and quiet!

Our leadership

All adults who regularly lead or help with meetings, activities and residentials have been checked that they are safe to work with children. They are supported by a number of volunteers to ensure we keep all of our members happy and safe. You can find out more information about our leadership team here or view our policies here.
